The first finds of individual diamonds in Russia date back to the 18th century, and in 1954, two women geologists found the first diamond deposit in the far northern Yakutia. It got the name "Zarnitsa" because in the diamond ore there were small red stones - pyropes, satellites of diamonds in kimberlite pipes. A year later, the famous Mir pipe was discovered, and then several more deposits. So, from scratch, for a dozen years in Yakutia, large-scale diamond mining is being developed, and whole cities are being built next to the deposits. But then the stones were not yet needed for jewelry. Industry developed rapidly in Russia, and diamonds were searched for and mined primarily for industrial needs. This was the beginning of the path of Russian diamonds to the world market.
